10th anniversary of OpenSource

Posted on February 9, 2008

Today(February 9th) is the 10th anniversary of the slogan OpenSource since Bruce Perens made it heard by public on February 9th 1998。

In a recent article, Mr Perens reviewed what has happened in the last ten years and commented on some of the big issues. Bruce Perens said that the core of the OpenSource is the end-user. It’s the end-user that makes everything possible.

OpenSource and FreeSoftware have influenced the whole IT industry in the last 10 years, and they have changed people’s understanding of the word innovation.

“Innovation has gone public. Many companies, institutions, and individuals share innovation on a daily basis, entirely in the open, through Free Software development communities.”

What’s gonna happen in the next 10 year? Nobody knows. But it’s said that in the next four year, about 80% of the software will be open source.

Bruce Perens also admitted that “Microsoft is still a problem”.
